If there was anything Churchill was not, it was modest. Not only did the Boer War turn Churchill into a national hero, launching his political career, but it proved without a doubt everything he had always believed about himself - that he was uniquely capable, that he was able to overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles and that he was destined for greatness. I was interested in this period in his life because I wanted to understand how Winston Churchill became the man we all remember, one of the most powerful and effective leaders in history. The book focuses on Churchill’s capture, imprisonment and escape during the Boer War in South Africa in 1899, when he was only 24. Why did you choose to write about this often overlooked, yet dramatic, episode in his life? In “Hero of the Empire,” you focus on the life of a young Winston Churchill.
